If you already host your website with us, email hosting simply attaches to the same domain. If you host elsewhere, that works too; only your mail records point here.

Yes. Mailboxes work over standard IMAP and SMTP, so any normal mail client connects. Webmail is there too when you are on a machine that is not yours.
How is this different from free email?
Mail comes from your own domain rather than a generic provider, mailboxes are yours to create and control, and filtering is applied server-side in front of every one of them.
Will spam filtering block legitimate mail?
Filtering runs ahead of the mailbox and is tuned to be cautious rather than aggressive, and anything held is recoverable rather than silently discarded.
